The Internet is Creepy
So, I’ve started Google-stalking myself. Now, before you think I’m completely crazy, let me give you my reasons for doing this. In the age when employers look at people’s Myspace accounts to make hiring/firing decisions, I feel like I should control as much as possible the information about me on the Internet. While a wonderful resource, it’s quite scary just how much people can find out about a person on the Internet. It’s also frightening (and in my opinion, highly unethical) that potential employers may one day use the Internet to run a “background check” on me.
I just performed my monthly self Google-stalk and found…there’s another me! There’s another person out there with my exact same name. Granted, she’s a baby, but still…I thought I was unique. Sigh.
Should there be greater limits to the type of information people can find on the Internet? Should Google go to greater lengths to protect ones privacy? I don’t like it that I feel I have to perform monthly Google-stalks on myself in order to make sure that the information on the Web about me is good. Once upon a time, I thought it was “cool” to find myself on the web. Now I’m not so sure.
Blogosphere, what do you think about this? Should the Internet have greater privacy controls, or is it okay as is?
